Although the series had been cancelled, Veena Sud never gave up on story ideas for a future season. In May 2013, she told the NYTimes: "It’s like being in love. Unless that person breaks up with you and blocks your calls and it's over, you're always going to be thinking about it." Once the discussions arose about Netflix taking it on and AMC changing their minds, Sud was prepared to pitch AMC and Fox on her plan for the third season — one that she said she viewed "almost like a pilot" for a new show — that would revisit the lives of Linden and Holder a year after the Rosie Larsen case and after their partnership has dissolved.
